Moving Tips

Moving is one task that can be overwhelming! But with planning and purchasing the right supplies, it doesn’t have to be. Overwhelming tasks are much easier when broken down into small steps. It’s recommended to start the packing process six weeks in advance.

Packing material list

Boxes- You can purchase these at the moving supply company or hardware stores. Grocery, book, and liquor stores have free boxes. Keep box size manageable to lift with packed items, so don’t load up on all large boxes.

Garbage Bags- Purchase clear bags for trash and packed items making it easier to see contents.

Tape- Purchase plenty of rolls with the dispenser so you can forget about scissors.

Markers – Get a multicolor box of these and color code by room.

Colored stickers- small pack, to match color coordinated boxes to new room placement.

Newspapers- Stock up for packing breakable items, including dishes.

Plastic bags-Keep those clear grocery bags for packing small items.

Before packing the house

Get rid of clutter, as well as those items you don’t love.

Separate trash from thrift store items in clearly defined areas.

Have a yard sell, then have a thrift store pick up unwanted items.

Dispose of trash.

Packing Stage

Items that are alike should stay together

Whether you or the moving company is packing, always keep things together. Things such as lamps, bookends, and extension cords with appliances should stay together. The loose parts of items should be taped to the item. Ziploc baggies or envelopes are recommended to hold multiple small parts. Electronic configurations should be documented on paper and then taped to the item. Put additional cords, parts, cables into a box and label parts box.

Fill your luggage

Don’t forget to fill those duffle bags and suitcases for needed essentials between homes. Use your luggage for its purpose, to transport clothes.

Keep items and papers of value with you

Valued items should be packed in your car trunk and kept with you while traveling to your new home. If room is limited, label the box something other than important values. Use an abbreviation such as IV (important valuables). Check your insurance policy to see if you need additional insurance for the move.

Last minute tips

Make it a priority every day to pack a certain number of boxes. Keep cleaning supplies out. Plan an essentials box that contains enough items between houses. Your suitcases should be filled with needed clothing items for a few days.

This box should contain additional needed items, toiletries, simple grocery items, some blankets and pillows, alarm clock. These boxes will go on the truck last and will be the first to come off the truck at the new house.

Have a plan ready when the moving truck arrives at your new home. Boxes are colored-coded so it is easy to place in each new room. Before the truck is unloaded, place a colored sticker on the door of each room to coordinate with your boxes. The movers will know where to place boxes per room.

As you unpack box-by-box, put each item away at that time. Remember to handle once and unpack only one box at a time. Break the box down and throw paper away immediately. Stacks of papers and boxes can be recycled at a later time.

Use these time tested tips for an easier move.
