Moving with Pets

Moving with Pets can be challenge especially from state to state. Proper planning is essential for a smooth

move. Pet owners should preplan all three phases of a move from point of origin, transport and final

destination.

Point of Origin- Before you move consider the following recommendations.

Make sure shots are up to date before moving

Get copy of health records of pets from your veterinarian.

Keeps a recent photo of your pet while traveling.

Know the laws of your destination address concerning pets.

Make sure your new lease or neighborhood will accommodate

your pet. Exotic pets may need special permits.

Your pets may need licensing or permits in transport or in the

new location.  Leash laws may apply at the new location. Put  identification on your pet with owner

contact information.  Whether you move your pet yourself or hire a pet transporter you will need a carrier. The

carrier should be large enough for the pet to stand up, turn around and lie down unless your pet is a horse. It

should have ventilation and a secure locking mechanism.  Your pet may benefit from getting accustomed to

the carrier before the flight or car ride. Place a favorite item beside the pet for security purposes.

Transport

If the choice is by air, confirm the flight for animals. Some allow for in-cabin pet flights under the passenger

seat. Others allow pets to travel in the cargo or air freight plans. If properly harnessed, a seeing-eye dog may

sit by the owner's feet.

Airport Recommendations include the following.

Feed your pet before flight time 5-6 hours before takeoff

No water for two hours before take-off.

Exercise your pet before transport.

Car Transport Recommendations include the following.

Do not give your pet food or water for several hours before your trip.

While traveling, only feed once per day.

Keep water available in your car, preferably from your former home.

Stop to exercise your pet and let them have water.

Leave windows cracked if possible to allow fresh air to circulate.

Overnight accommodations and care should include these items.

Keep food, fresh water, and dishes

Leashes and brushes

Destination- Arrival at New Home

Pets need time to adjust. Use the same food, bowls, bedding and toys as in your former home. Give your pet

extra attention when possible. Find your new veterinarian and make contact as soon as possible. Allow your

pet to look around your new home and establish a routine for security.
